8th March 2008PHAENOMENALE 2007
New im Archiv: MULTIMEDIA 2007 / VIDEOS

MULTIMEDIA 2008 / VIDEOS

6th February 2008WELCOME TO SOUND STUDIES, SAM AUINGER
My Definition of Sound Studies: “Since the Rennaisance we have had an agreed visual perspective, and language to speak acurately about images. This we still lack in the world of sound, where words fail us to even describe for instance the complex waveforms of an urban environment, much less what those sounds do to us and how they make us feel. We are lost in a storm of noise with no language for discussion.” Photo by Thekla Ehling

26th January 2008LIFESTYLE
1993 Karl worked with the ensemble “Theater der Klänge” (artistic supervision by Jörg U. Lensing) in Düsseldorf on a visual performance for the song “Lifestyle.” The “Mechanical Ballet” (Das Mechanische Ballett) of the Bauhaus-artist Kurt Schmidt served them as example, whose debut performance was given in 1923 at the Bauhaus-stage in Jena. 19th January 2008MUSIC IS HERE TO SAVE US
Interview for HigherFrequency, NL – conducted by Nick Lawrence Not many artists will start musing about Mozart, Thomas Edison or the binary alphabet during an interview, but then again most DJs do not lecture at the Berlin University of the Arts in a course about sound. Karl Bartos didn’t seem particularly interested in talking about CD releases or the next big thing in dance music, but after thirty years in the business, who can really blame him? Karl Bartos started out his musical journey as a classically trained percussionist and keyboardist. Shortly after, he joined up with possibly the most renowned electronic outfit of the 70’s and 80’s. While performing and writing for the German legends, Karl was instrumental in the creation of modern classics like “Radio-Activity”, “Trans Europe Express”, “Man Machine”, “Computer World”, “Tour de France” and “The Mix.” The sound of his former band had a great influence on the world of electronic music, although this is something he plays down. Despite being in his 50’s and being dedicated to his work at the Berlin University, Karl is still traveling the world with laptop in his hand playing to packed dancefloors and entering the realm of sound art.
