ROBERT HEEL: THE MELODY MAKER Hello class,
today we're going to learn how to compose melodies, since some of you have pointed out serious issues with that.
I also hope you paid close attention to our analysis of early Detroit classics last time. You are highly encouraged to use your freshly gained knowledge in your next assignments.
First of all we`ll watch a relevant instructional film.

A VISUAL-MUSICIAN IN VIENNA Interview Karl Bartos, Galerie der Gegenwart, January 2009
Hamburg. A cold, clear day in January. Karl Bartos enters the café of the Galerie der Gegenwart. Somewhat in a rush he steers through the room straight towards our table, orders a double espresso, a carbonated water and after a few friendly introductory words we can begin. Camera: close-up Karl. Sound: restaurant noises, no background music, Karl’s Rheinian dialect meets our Viennese German.
Interview by Eva Fischer and Romana Kleewein.
OPENING EVENT WITH KARL BARTOS To kick off the festival, the guys at sound:frame bring in Karl Bartos.
Opening the exhibition and related festivities and events, Bartos presents a live cinema performance. With a background in percussion and keyboard, Bartos surely knows how to get a party started – so regardless if you know what live cinema is, come for the experience and get ready to dance into the night.

THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN The Quitus, March 11th, 2009 – John Doran speaks to Karl Bartos about Autobahn and the birth of electro
Late in 2007 when Luke Turner and I were feverishly planning an online magazine pitch over pints of deliciously remembered Eden Ale in the Mucky Pup in Islington, we were clear about what the site should do. In the broadest of brush strokes we knew what was necessary: a magazine that wasn't trapped into a cycle of canonical worship of Dylan/Beatles/Rolling Stones/Led Zeppelin. We wanted to celebrate modern music; the birth of electronic music, of hip hop, of punk rock, disco right forwards to the present day. But when did this defining moment occur? All music has an earlier precedent, so it would have to be a symbolic start date. It didn't take us long to realise that our year zero would have to be the album Autobahn, released in 1974.
VISUAL MUSIC AT MATTER LONDON Former Robot Speaks To Quietus Ahead Of London Date
The Quietus, March 10th, 2009
Karl Bartos will appear at Matter this Friday, March 13th, showtime approx 0:45.
The Quietus had the chance to speak to Bartos, who spent 15 years with the seminal robot-pop troupe, ahead of this weekend's date.
Heading to O2-based club Matter with decks/vocoder operator Mathias Black, Bartos will be performing his new programme ‘The Rhythmic Screen’, putting films, video loops and animated pictograms against his musical back catalogue to forge a new reflexive rhythm between the two.
LIVE CINEMA PLAYS LONDON Matter Club welcomes Karl Bartos to perform his audio-visual programme.
Karl Bartos’ Live Cinema refers to the classic form of cinema as well as to media art. Together with Mathias Black – on deks and vocoder – he performs his new programme “The Rhythmic Screen”. The large screens are home to films, video loops and animations of cleanly simple pictograms – emphasizing the surrealistic flow of information within our media.
Attending to his set, the audience will have the chance to experience some of his past and present works; The electro classics in which he took part as co-author like “Numbers”, “Computer World”, “Homecomputer”, “Computer Love”, “The Man Machine” or “The Robots” as well as samples of his critically acclaimed solo work “Communication.”
“You can dance to the music while you watch the screens”, he comments. “It’s all about rhythm: How the rhythm of the moving images and the rhythm of the music converge into an all-over audio-visual performance.”

MOSCOW NEWS It's been nearly 20 years since Karl Bartos left KW, the pioneering band that back in the mid 1970s laid the foundations for today's electronic music scene. The music Bartos makes as a solo artist is in many ways similar to what KW was doing when he was part of it, from 1975 to 1991. Although Bartos' more recent material strolls somewhere between synth pop and electronic experimentation, it is quite reminiscent of KW's robotized electro pop sound with a heavy use of vocoder. And all that is enhanced with videos projected on a screen, turning a show by Bartos and accompanying musicians into a fully fledged sound and video performance. The musician is also known for his interest in interactivity during his live shows, and those who show up for the concert may also expect to become participants of the concert at some point.
