Danke nochmals.

What a gig, a truly fantastic musical experience. I was lucky to have seen Kraftwerk at the Academy( then know as the Hummingbird back in the early 90's and to have seen Karl their as well was fantastic...I wish the gig had been longer. I was not supprised to see Barney and Hooky from NewOrder being at the gig and was a pre bonus as I went to Manchester on Monday night to watch New Order. Karl come bask to Brum soon ...can't wait otherwise I will need to come to Colongne to see you in December Cheers Jase

I think you'll find KB played in Glasgow in October 2003.

Glad you Brummies enjoyed the show.

“Robot Returns”, the posters say, diplomatically announcing this one-off date in a chilly Midlands town. To aficiandos, Bartos, formerly one part of generally reclusive techno pioneers Kraftwerk, is an enigma to many : a German university professor who also sidelines as a occasional musician, DJ, producer, remixer, and even more occasionally as a live performer : this is his first show in Britain outside of London in almost twenty five years.

Whilst barred from using the word “Kraftwerk” anywhere in relation to the performance, it’s clear that to the thousand or so punters in the cavernous Academy, that Bartos is as revered as Kraftwerk themselves. In person, it’s clear his departure from his former band wasn’t due to musical differences. The set (comprising of solo work, the entire of Kraftwerk’s classic “Computer World”, and a handful of KW’s better known works), resembles nothing so much as an ‘alternate history’ to his former band – an example of what could have been, had Kraftwerk decided to make records instead of excuses.

The opening medley of “Numbers/Computerwelt” presents a revamped approach to the established canon – the old songs are beefed up, flourished, and expanded upon – though this approach dispenses with the minimal and tasteful economy of Kraftwerk’s vision in favour of a rather larger, unsubtle reworking, the songs techno potential is unleashed in favour of thumping, enormous epic visions of the songs.

During Bartos’ solo work (taken from the recent “Communication” album), the same themes – electronic pop music – are followed. In many respects, it’s impossible to see the join between the old and new : the ideas, presentation and sound are the same. However, with the brand recognition and major label contract that Kraftwerk have, Bartos cannot, unfortunately, fail to seem as anything except a lesser player, despite the integrity of his vision – the same vision that was instrumental in making Kraftwerk unique and important in popular culture.

Visually the show is certainly the equal of any touring act today - the themes of man and machine, computers, communication, the universal language of music are presented within a classic format - a panorama of video screens with simple logos, animation and archive footage to illustrate the point. To Bartos’ left and right, a small team of boffins flesh out his musical vision with an array of laptops, keyboards and video players.

Naturally, the biggest cheers for the night – aside from a dedication to New Order, who are in the far corners of the building - are for the old classics. You are never more than a song or two away from the clipped beauty of “The Model”, the sleek romance of “Trans Europe Express”, or the synergy of “Tour De France”. It’s impossible not to compare his performance to that of his former bandmates Kraftwerk, currently touring a similar set on the back of a concert album, and the similarities are what also bring out the differences. Bartos’ performance is warmer, the songs more immediate, less cerebral and more emotional.

He may be a robot, but he’s more human than the man machine. And that is no bad thing : as good as Kraftwerk, but in an entirely different way.

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed last night’s gig in Birmingham. What a great experience. It was a pleasure to see a genuine musical legend at work.
It was good to hear Electric Music tracks again; didn’t realise that it’s been twelve years since I purchased the Esperanto album.
Hope there will be some more material out soon.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen/ Best Regards.
